Origin & History
From Latin matri- (“mother”) + local (“of place”), formed in anthropological usage to describe post-marital residence with the wife’s family.
लैटिन matri- (अर्थ: ‘माता’) + local (अर्थ: ‘स्थान/निवास से संबंधित’) से बना; नृविज्ञान में विवाहोपरांत पत्नी के परिवार के साथ निवास बताने के लिए प्रयोग।
Definition
(In anthropology) Describes a residence system where newly married couples live with the wife’s family/kin, or a couple that settles with the wife’s family rather than the husband’s.
(नृविज्ञान में) ऐसा निवास-प्रणाली/रीति जिसमें विवाह के बाद दम्पती पत्नी के परिवार/कुटुम्ब के साथ या उसके निकट रहते हैं; अर्थात पति के नहीं बल्कि पत्नी के परिवार के साथ बसना।
