From Old English matta (“mat, cushion”), from Latin matta (“mat, coarse carpet”), possibly of Mediterranean origin.

Definition
A mat is a flat piece of material (such as woven straw, rubber, or fabric) used on the floor or another surface for wiping feet, sitting, exercising, or protecting the surface; it can also mean hair or fibers that have become tangled into a thick mass, or a non-shiny (matte) surface.
मैट एक सपाट वस्तु/चादर (जैसे बुना हुआ तिनका, रबर या कपड़ा) है जिसे फर्श या किसी सतह पर पैर पोंछने, बैठने, व्यायाम करने या सतह की रक्षा के लिए रखा जाता है; इसका अर्थ बाल/रेशों का उलझकर घना गुच्छा होना भी है, या बिना चमक वाली (मैट/मैट फिनिश) सतह भी।
