यह शब्द mark + up से बना है; पहले इसका अर्थ ‘कीमत को ऊपर चिन्हित/बढ़ाकर लिखना’ था, बाद में यह दस्तावेज़/टेक्स्ट ‘मार्कअप’ के लिए भी प्रयोग होने लगा—ऐसे अतिरिक्त निशान/टैग जो संरचना या फ़ॉर्मैटिंग बताते हैं (जैसे HTML)।
Definition
Markups are added notations or increases: in documents they are tags/symbols that describe structure or display, and in pricing they are the extra amount or percentage added to the cost price (or a general rise in price).
