आधुनिक लैटिन Malvaceae, लैटिन malva (‘मैलो/खबाज़ी’ अर्थात मल्लो पौधा) + -aceae (वनस्पति कुलों के नामों में प्रयुक्त प्रत्यय) से बना है।

Malvaceae is a botanical family (order Malvales) of mainly herbs, shrubs, and trees characterized by showy five-petaled flowers, often with many stamens, and frequently mucilaginous tissues; it includes economically important plants such as cotton (Gossypium), okra (Abelmoschus), and hibiscus (Hibiscus).
मालवेसी (Malvaceae) फूलदार पौधों का एक वनस्पति कुल (माल्वेलीज़ गण) है, जिसमें प्रायः शाक, झाड़ियाँ और वृक्ष आते हैं; इनके फूल अक्सर आकर्षक पाँच पंखुड़ियों वाले होते हैं, पुंकेसर अनेक हो सकते हैं और ऊतकों में अक्सर चिपचिपा/श्लेष्मल पदार्थ (म्यूसिलेज) पाया जाता है; इसमें कपास (Gossypium), भिंडी (Abelmoschus) और गुड़हल (Hibiscus) जैसे आर्थिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण पौधे शामिल हैं।
