Origin & History
From Middle English lute, via Old French luth, from Arabic al-ʿūd (“the oud,” a related instrument). The verb sense ‘to plunder’ is related to ‘loot’ and developed in English usage separately.
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी lute से, पुरानी फ़्रेंच luth के माध्यम से, जो अरबी al-ʿūd (“अल-ऊद/ऊद,” एक संबंधित वाद्य) से आया। ‘लूटना/प्लंडर करना’ वाला क्रिया-रूप ‘loot’ से संबद्ध माना जाता है और अंग्रेज़ी में अलग विकास के रूप में आया।
Definition
A lute is a stringed musical instrument with a rounded (often pear-shaped) body and a neck, played by plucking the strings; historically common in European and Middle Eastern music. Also, as a verb, to lute means to steal or plunder, especially in a riot or war.
ल्यूट (वाद्य) एक तार वाला वाद्य यंत्र है जिसका शरीर गोल/नाशपाती-आकार का और गर्दन (नेक) होती है; इसे तारों को उँगलियों या पिक से झंकारकर बजाया जाता है और यह यूरोपीय व मध्य-पूर्वी संगीत में ऐतिहासिक रूप से प्रसिद्ध है। क्रिया के रूप में “to lute” का अर्थ लूटना/प्लंडर करना भी होता है, विशेषकर दंगे या युद्ध जैसी अव्यवस्था में।
