From French levier (“a lever”), from lever (“to raise”), ultimately from Latin levare (“to lighten, raise”). The figurative and financial senses developed later from the idea of gaining advantage.

Definition
Leverage means (1) the mechanical advantage gained by using a lever, (2) the power or influence used to gain an advantage in a situation (especially negotiations), and (3) in finance/business, using borrowed money or fixed costs to increase potential returns (with higher risk).
Leverage का अर्थ है (1) लीवर (डंडे) के प्रयोग से मिलने वाला यांत्रिक लाभ/बल-वृद्धि, (2) किसी स्थिति में लाभ पाने के लिए इस्तेमाल किया गया प्रभाव/दबाव (खासकर बातचीत/मोल-भाव में), और (3) वित्त/व्यापार में उधार धन या स्थिर लागतों का उपयोग करके संभावित लाभ बढ़ाना (पर जोखिम भी बढ़ता है)।
