यह नाम इतालवी तथा अन्य पाश्चात्य यूरोपीय रूपों के माध्यम से यूनानी शहर ‘नाउपाक्तोस’ (Ναύπακτος) के स्थान-नाम से आया; अंग्रेज़ी में यह शब्द विशेष रूप से 1571 के ‘बैटल ऑफ़ लेपैंटो’ के कारण प्रसिद्ध हुआ।
Definition
Lepanto is the older/Western name for the Greek port town now called Naupaktos, and it is widely used in English to refer to the Battle of Lepanto, a major naval battle fought in 1571 between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire.
लेपैंटो यूनान के बंदरगाही शहर (आज का नाम नाउपाक्तोस) का पुराना/पाश्चात्य नाम है; अंग्रेज़ी में यह नाम प्रायः 1571 में लड़ी गई ‘बैटल ऑफ़ लेपैंटो’ के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, जो होली लीग और उस्मानी (ओटोमन) साम्राज्य के बीच एक महत्वपूर्ण नौसैनिक युद्ध था।
