यह शब्द मध्य अंग्रेज़ी (Middle English) के laas/ lasy से आया माना जाता है, जिस पर पुरानी फ़्रेंच las ('थका हुआ') का प्रभाव रहा; पहले अर्थ 'थका/मंद' से जुड़ा था, बाद में अर्थ 'आलसी, काम करने से बचने वाला' विकसित हुआ।
Definition
Lazy describes a person who avoids work or effort, or something marked by idleness, sluggishness, or a relaxed pace; it can also mean careless/half-hearted work, and in computing it refers to delaying evaluation until needed.
'Lazy' ऐसे व्यक्ति के लिए कहा जाता है जो काम या प्रयास करने से कतराता है; यह सुस्ती, धीमी गति या आरामदेह/अलसाई माहौल को भी दर्शा सकता है। कभी-कभी यह लापरवाह/आधा-अधूरा प्रयास (जैसे 'lazy writing') के अर्थ में आता है, और कंप्यूटिंग में इसका मतलब होता है परिणाम तभी निकालना जब उसकी तुरंत जरूरत हो (lazy evaluation)।
