Origin & History
From jet (a fast stream, later ‘jet aircraft’) + stream; used in meteorology from the mid-20th century to name high-altitude wind currents.
‘जेट’ (तेज़ धारा/प्रवाह; बाद में ‘जेट विमान’) + ‘स्ट्रीम’ (धारा) से बना; 20वीं शताब्दी के मध्य में मौसम-विज्ञान में ऊपरी वायुमंडल की तेज़ पवन-धाराओं के लिए यह शब्द प्रचलित हुआ।
Definition
A jetstream is a long, narrow band of very strong winds in the upper atmosphere (especially near the tropopause) that influences weather patterns and can speed up or slow down aircraft.
