यह लैटिन intromittere से आया है, जिसका अर्थ है “अंदर भेजना/अंदर आने देना; प्रविष्ट कराना”; यह intro- (“भीतर”) + mittere (“भेजना/छोड़ना”) से बना है। अंग्रेज़ी में बाद में इसका प्रयोग औपचारिक/कानूनी अर्थों में “दखल देना/हस्तक्षेप करना” तथा “डालना/प्रविष्ट कराना” के लिए होने लगा।
