लैटिन inter- (“बीच/के बीच”) + radiate (“किरणें निकालना/विकिरित करना”) से निर्मित; -ate वाले वैज्ञानिक/तकनीकी क्रियापदों के ढंग पर बना, और 19वीं शताब्दी से विशेष/तकनीकी अंग्रेज़ी में मिलता है।

To radiate or send out rays in such a way that they meet, cross, or spread between parts; used especially of light, heat, or influence spreading in intersecting directions.
