A modern compound formed from inner-directed (used in sociology/personality studies, notably contrasted with other-directed) + the noun-forming suffix -ness. The contrast was popularized in mid-20th-century social theory.

Definition
Inner-directedness is a personality orientation in which a person relies primarily on inner convictions—such as personal values, conscience, and long-term aims—to make decisions and regulate behavior, even when social pressure or trends push in another direction.
