From inland + the adjective-forming suffix -ish, meaning 'somewhat/characteristically'; used from early modern English onward, often with a sense of 'provincial'.

Definition
Situated away from the sea and the main centers; belonging to the interior parts of a country, and sometimes used (often derogatorily) for someone or something seen as provincial or unsophisticated.
