'इंडी' शब्द 'इंडिपेंडेंट' (independent) का संक्षिप्त रूप है; 20वीं सदी के उत्तरार्ध में विशेषकर 'इंडी म्यूज़िक' के रूप में स्वतंत्र लेबल वाले कलाकारों के लिए प्रचलित हुआ और बाद में फ़िल्म, गेम्स तथा प्रकाशन आदि क्षेत्रों तक फैल गया।
