From Scots and English: high + land; the plural “Highlands” became a conventional name for the mountainous northern region of Scotland (contrasted with “Lowlands”).

Highlands are areas of land that are higher than the surrounding country, typically hilly or mountainous; the term is often used as a proper name for the Highlands of Scotland.
