यह high + pressure का संयुक्त रूप है; पहले भौतिक दाब के लिए शाब्दिक अर्थ में और बाद में मानसिक/सामाजिक दबाव के लिए रूपक अर्थ में प्रयुक्त हुआ (आधुनिक अंग्रेज़ी में, इंजीनियरिंग/भौतिकी के तकनीकी प्रयोग से प्रभावित)।
