अंग्रेज़ी hard (कठोर) + pan (परत/स्तर) से बना; मिट्टी-विज्ञान और खनन में ‘पैन’ जैसी कठोर परत के अर्थ में प्रचलित।
Definition
Hardpan is a dense, cemented or compacted subsurface layer (often of clay, silica, or iron compounds) that forms in soil or sediment and restricts drainage and root growth; in mining it can also refer to a hardened layer in alluvial/placer deposits.
हार्डपैन मिट्टी या तलछट की एक घनी, सीमेंटित या अत्यधिक दबकर बनी उप-सतही परत (अक्सर चिकनी मिट्टी, सिलिका या लौह यौगिकों से) होती है, जो पानी के निकास और पौधों की जड़ों की वृद्धि को रोकती है; खनन में यह जलोढ़/प्लेसर जमाओं में पाई जाने वाली कठोर परत के लिए भी कहा जाता है।
