From Middle English ham(me) meaning “back of the knee; hind part of the thigh,” from Old English hamm; later extended to the meat from a pig’s hind leg. The theatrical sense “ham” (overactor) is attested from the late 19th century.
यह शब्द मध्य अंग्रेज़ी ham(me) से आया है जिसका अर्थ “घुटने के पीछे का भाग; जांघ का पिछला हिस्सा” था, और यह पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी hamm से निकला है। बाद में इसका अर्थ सूअर के पिछले पैर के मांस (हैम) के लिए भी होने लगा। रंगमंच/अभिनय में “ham” (ओवरएक्ट करने वाला) वाला अर्थ 19वीं सदी के उत्तरार्ध से मिलता है।

“Hams” is the plural of “ham.” It most commonly means pieces of cured pork from a pig’s hind leg (sold as meat or served as food). Informally, “hams” can also mean people who ham it up—actors or performers who overact for attention.
