यह शब्द मध्य अंग्रेज़ी (gingivere/ginger) से, पुरानी फ़्रांसीसी (gingibre) के माध्यम से, लैटिन (zingiber) और यूनानी (zingíberis) से आया है; इसकी जड़ें अंततः दक्षिण एशियाई स्रोत, संस्कृत ‘शृङ्गवेर’ (अर्थ: ‘सींग-आकार का’) में मिलती हैं।
Definition
Ginger is the spicy, fragrant underground stem (rhizome) of a plant, widely used in cooking (fresh, dried, powdered, pickled) and in traditional remedies, especially for nausea and digestion; the word can also mean a yellowish-red/brown color and, informally, a red-haired person.
जिंजर/अदरक एक तीखी, सुगंधित भूमिगत डंठल (राइजोम) है, जिसका उपयोग खाना पकाने (ताज़ा, सूखा, पाउडर, अचार आदि) और पारंपरिक औषधियों में, खासकर मतली और पाचन के लिए किया जाता है; यह शब्द पीला-लाल/भूरा रंग के अर्थ में भी आता है और बोलचाल में लाल बालों वाले व्यक्ति के लिए भी प्रयुक्त हो सकता है।
