Shortening of “alligator,” which comes from Spanish “el lagarto” (“the lizard”), from Latin “lacerta” (“lizard”).

Definition
“Gator” is an informal shortening of “alligator.” It most commonly refers to the large crocodilian reptile found in the southeastern United States; by extension it can mean a Floridian (informal), and “gators” can also mean gaiters—protective coverings worn over the lower legs and shoes.
