From the verb “gaslight,” popularized by the 1938 play “Gas Light” (and later films) in which a husband manipulates his wife into doubting her sanity; later generalized to mean psychological manipulation.

Used to describe a situation where a person was psychologically manipulated—often through denial, contradiction, or lying—so that they began to doubt their own recollection or judgment.
