Origin & History
From the verb freelance (early 20th century), derived from freelance (noun) meaning “a mercenary; a ‘free lance’ not bound to a lord,” first recorded in the 19th century (popularized by Sir Walter Scott).

Freelancing is the practice of working for yourself, taking short-term or project-based assignments from different clients instead of holding a single long-term job with one employer.
