Origin & History
From flood + plain; plain comes from Old French plain and Latin planus (“flat”). The compound is used in modern English for river-adjacent land subject to flooding.
यह शब्द flood (बाढ़) + plain (समतल मैदान) से बना है; plain का स्रोत पुरानी फ़्रेंच plain और लैटिन planus (“समतल”) है। आधुनिक अंग्रेज़ी में यह संयुक्त शब्द नदी के पास की उस भूमि के लिए प्रयोग होता है जिस पर बाढ़ आती रहती है।
Definition
A floodplain is the broad, flat land next to a river that regularly floods during high water, spreading water and depositing silt, which often makes the soil fertile but also creates flood risk for settlements and farms.
फ्लडप्लेन (बाढ़-मैदान) नदी या नाले के किनारे की विस्तृत, समतल और नीची भूमि होती है जहाँ ऊँचे जल स्तर पर बार-बार बाढ़ आती है; बाढ़ का पानी गाद/मिट्टी जमा करता है जिससे मिट्टी उपजाऊ बनती है, लेकिन बस्तियों और खेती के लिए बाढ़ का खतरा भी रहता है।
