From Middle English and Old French (via *nois de filbert*), ultimately from Medieval Latin *nux filberti* ‘nut of (St) Philibert’, associated with the nut’s season around St Philibert’s day.

Definition
Filbert most commonly refers to the edible nut of the hazel plant (a hazelnut). It can also mean the hazel tree itself, and in art it names a paintbrush whose bristles form a rounded, oval/tongue-shaped tip, useful for soft edges and blending.
