From Middle English “fend/fiend,” from Old English “fēond” meaning “enemy, foe,” originally the present participle of “fēon” (“to hate”); later influenced by the Christian sense “the Devil” and then generalized to “evil person.”

“Fiends” is the plural form of “fiend.” It can mean wicked, cruel people or demonic beings; it is also used informally for people who are obsessed with or very enthusiastic about something (e.g., a “chess fiend”).
