स्कॉट्स/स्कॉटिश विधिक प्रयोग में ‘feu’ (“सामंती भू-धारण; वंशानुगत पट्टा/लीज”) + -ing से बना, जिसका मूल पुरानी फ़्रांसीसी fieu/fief (“फ़ीफ/जागीर”) में मिलता है।

To place land under a feudal landholding system, especially the Scottish system where land is granted or held as a “feu” in return for payment or service.
