From fern + the suffix -ery (denoting a place associated with something); recorded in English in the 19th century, popular with the Victorian-era fashion for fern cultivation (pteridomania).

Definition
A fernery is a specially prepared place—such as a greenhouse, conservatory section, or shaded garden bed—designed to cultivate and exhibit ferns, usually with cool, moist, and sheltered conditions.
