यह शब्द पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी feorm (अर्थ: ‘रसद/भोजन/लगान’) से आया और आगे चलकर ‘पट्टा/जायदाद’ के अर्थ में विकसित हुआ; पुरानी फ़्रांसीसी ferme के प्रभाव से आधुनिक अर्थ ‘कृषि-भूमि/खेती का स्थान’ बना।
