From Middle English via Old French, ultimately from Greek phantasia (“appearance, imagination”), from phantazein (“to make visible, imagine”).

Fantasy is an idea, story, or mental picture created by imagination and not based on reality; it can also mean the fantasy genre in books/films, and in some contexts a fanciful design.
