Modern Latin Ericaceae, from Latin Erica (a genus name) + -aceae (a suffix used for plant family names), ultimately from Greek ereikē meaning 'heather'.

Definition
Ericaceae is a plant family (the heath/heather family) found widely in temperate and some subtropical regions; many members prefer acidic, nutrient-poor soils and include shrubs, small trees, and some herbs, with notable ornamentals (rhododendrons, azaleas) and edible fruits (blueberries, cranberries).
