यह शब्द यूनानी epigramma ‘अभिलेख/शिलालेख’ से आया है, जो epigraphein ‘पर लिखना’ (epi ‘पर’ + graphein ‘लिखना’) से बना; लैटिन epigramma के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया और बाद में इसका अर्थ छोटी, चुटीली कविता/उक्ति के रूप में विकसित हुआ।
