फ़्रांसीसी मूल (in- + panel) से; आरंभ में नामों को सूची/रजिस्टर (पैनल/रोल) पर दर्ज करने के अर्थ में, बाद में जूरी/समिति की नियुक्ति के विशेष अर्थ में प्रचलित हुआ।
