Named after Arpad Elo (1903–1992), a Hungarian-American physicist who developed the Elo rating system for chess; later adopted widely in other games and sports.

Elo is a rating system that estimates the relative skill of players based on game results; after each match, ratings go up or down depending on the expected outcome.
