Formed in the mid-19th century from electro- (relating to electricity) + plate (to cover with a layer of metal); associated with the development of industrial electrolysis-based plating processes.

Definition
To deposit a thin layer of metal (such as silver, nickel, chromium, or gold) onto the surface of another object using an electric current in a chemical solution; used to prevent corrosion, improve wear resistance, enhance appearance, or change surface properties.
