Origin & History
From German Edaphon (coined in the early 20th century), from Greek edaphos ‘ground, soil’ + -on (collective/neutral suffix), referring to the total soil-dwelling organisms.
जर्मन ‘Edaphon’ (20वीं सदी के आरम्भ में गढ़ा गया) से; ग्रीक ‘edaphos’ (भूमि/मिट्टी) + ‘-on’ (समूहवाचक/नपुंसक प्रत्यय) से बना, जिसका अर्थ मिट्टी में रहने वाले समस्त जीवों के समुदाय से है।
Definition
Edaphon refers to all living organisms inhabiting the soil—such as bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, nematodes, mites, springtails, and other micro- and small fauna—considered as a biological community that influences soil fertility and nutrient cycling.
एडाफॉन से तात्पर्य मिट्टी में रहने वाले सभी जीवित जीवों से है—जैसे बैक्टीरिया, फफूंद, शैवाल, प्रोटोज़ोआ, नेमाटोड, घुन, स्प्रिंगटेल तथा अन्य सूक्ष्म व छोटे जीव—जिन्हें एक जैविक समुदाय के रूप में माना जाता है और जो मिट्टी की उर्वरता व पोषक-चक्रण को प्रभावित करते हैं।
