यह शब्द पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी drān/drǣn “नर मधुमक्खी” से आया; “धीमी गुनगुनाहट” वाला अर्थ मधुमक्खियों की भिनभिनाहट से विकसित हुआ, और “बिना पायलट का विमान/वाहन” वाला आधुनिक अर्थ 20वीं सदी में पायलट-रहित/रिमोट-नियंत्रित यानों के सादृश्य से प्रचलित हुआ।

“Drone” can mean (1) a steady, low buzzing or humming sound (like a motor or insects), (2) a male bee whose main role is to mate with the queen, and (3) an unmanned aircraft/vehicle controlled remotely or by onboard systems; it can also describe a person who works or speaks in a dull, monotonous way.
“ड्रोन” का अर्थ (1) लगातार धीमी गुनगुनाहट/भिनभिनाहट (जैसे इंजन या कीटों की आवाज़), (2) नर मधुमक्खी जो मुख्यतः रानी से संयोग के लिए होती है, और (3) बिना पायलट का विमान/वाहन जिसे दूर से या स्वचालित प्रणाली से चलाया जाता है; यह ऐसे व्यक्ति के लिए भी कहा जा सकता है जो नीरस ढंग से काम करे या बोले।
