From the verb phrase dress down (“to scold, to berate”), recorded in English in the 19th–20th centuries; the noun dressing-down developed from this sense (distinct from dress down meaning “to wear casual clothes”).
यह अंग्रेज़ी के क्रियात्मक वाक्यांश dress down (“डाँटना/झिड़कना”) से बना है, जिसका प्रयोग 19वीं–20वीं शताब्दी में मिलता है; इसी अर्थ से संज्ञा dressing-down बनी (यह ‘कैज़ुअल कपड़े पहनना’ वाले dress down से अलग अर्थ है)।
Definition
A dressing-down is a strong, often public or formal rebuke given to someone for doing something wrong; it can imply being sharply criticized by a superior.
