From down + beat; in musical sense, linked to the downward motion of a conductor’s hand marking the first beat, later extended to mean 'gloomy' in figurative use.

In music, the downbeat is the first beat of a bar, usually the strongest accent; in general use, it describes a mood or attitude that is gloomy or pessimistic.
