From Latin domesticus (“of the house, household”), via French domestique; the verb domesticate developed in English to mean “make domestic/bring under human control,” with -ing forming the present participle/gerund.

Domesticating is the process of taming and selectively breeding wild animals or cultivating wild plants so they become accustomed to humans and useful in human settings.
