Origin & History
From Hindustani (Hindi–Urdu) doāb, from Persian dō ‘two’ + āb ‘water (river)’, literally ‘land between two waters’.
हिन्दुस्तानी (हिंदी–उर्दू) ‘दोआब’ से, जो फ़ारसी ‘दो’ (दो) + ‘आब’ (पानी/नदी) से बना है; शाब्दिक अर्थ: ‘दो पानी/दो नदियों के बीच की भूमि’।
Definition
A doab is a geographical region of land formed between two rivers, typically where they run roughly parallel and meet downstream; such areas are often very fertile due to alluvial soil and irrigation.
दोआब वह भौगोलिक भू-भाग है जो दो नदियों के बीच बनता है, प्रायः जब नदियाँ कुछ दूरी तक समानांतर बहती हैं और आगे जाकर मिलती हैं; ऐसी भूमि जलोढ़ मिट्टी और सिंचाई के कारण अक्सर अत्यंत उपजाऊ होती है।
