Definition
The diencephalon is the central part of the forebrain that acts as a major relay and regulatory hub: the thalamus relays sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, and the hypothalamus regulates autonomic functions and endocrine control (e.g., temperature, hunger, sleep, hormones).
