From French diégétique, ultimately from Greek diēgēsis meaning ‘narration’ or ‘recounting’ (diēgeisthai ‘to narrate’).

Definition
In film and media studies, diegetic refers to elements that exist inside the story’s world (the diegesis), such as characters, locations, and sounds that the characters can hear. For example, a radio playing in a scene is diegetic sound, while background score added for the audience is non-diegetic.
