From the verb detain (from Old French detenir, from Latin detinere ‘to hold back’, de- ‘down/away’ + tenere ‘to hold’) + the noun-forming suffix -ment.
यह detain क्रिया से बना है (पुरानी फ़्रांसीसी detenir से, जो लैटिन detinere ‘रोककर रखना’ से आया: de- ‘दूर/नीचे’ + tenere ‘पकड़ना/धारण करना’) और इसमें संज्ञा-निर्माण प्रत्यय -ment जुड़ा है।
Definition
Detainment refers to holding a person (often by legal authority) in custody for a period of time, or preventing someone/something from proceeding. It is commonly used for short-term custody (e.g., by police/immigration) and can also mean a delay or restraint.
Detainment का अर्थ किसी व्यक्ति को (अक्सर कानूनी अधिकार द्वारा) कुछ समय के लिए हिरासत में रखना या किसी व्यक्ति/वस्तु को आगे बढ़ने से रोकना है। इसका उपयोग प्रायः अल्पकालिक हिरासत (जैसे पुलिस/आव्रजन द्वारा) के लिए होता है और कभी-कभी विलंब या रोक के अर्थ में भी होता है।
