From French défroquer, literally “to remove the frock (monastic/clerical robe)”, from de- (remove) + froc “frock, monk’s habit”; first recorded in English in the 17th century.

To deprive a priest/clergyman of his clerical rank and rights, often as a punishment, so that he is no longer allowed to act as clergy.
