From cutin (a plant biopolymer forming the cuticle) + -ize (to make or cause) + -ing (present participle). Cutin is named from Latin cutis “skin”.

Cutinizing refers to the biological process in plants where cells (especially epidermal cell walls) become impregnated with cutin, producing a protective, waxy cuticle that reduces water loss and helps defend against pathogens.
