यह शब्द मध्य अंग्रेज़ी crane से, और उससे पहले पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी cran (पक्षी) से आया है; जर्मन Kranich आदि से संबंध है। मशीन वाला अर्थ पक्षी की लम्बी गर्दन/भुजा जैसी आकृति की समानता से विकसित हुआ।
Definition
Crane can mean (1) a tall wading bird with long legs and a long neck, or (2) a lifting machine used in construction/industry; as a verb it means to stretch one’s neck to see better or to hoist something using such a machine.
