From cow + boy; recorded from the early 18th century in American English, originally meaning a boy who tended cows, later a mounted cattle worker in the American West.

Definition
A cowboy is traditionally a hired worker on a cattle ranch who rides horses, herds cattle, and does ranch work; in modern informal use it can also mean someone who acts independently and takes risky or careless actions, sometimes ignoring rules.
