From Hindi/Urdu qulī (क़ुली), likely from Turkish kul ‘servant/slave’; used in English from the 16th–17th centuries, later associated with Asian indentured labor in colonial contexts.

Definition
In some South Asian contexts, it can mean a porter (e.g., at a railway station) who carries luggage; however, in many English-speaking contexts the word is now considered dated and offensive because it was used for exploited Asian indentured laborers.
