From Middle English via Old French, from Latin conventus (“assembly, gathering”), from convenire (“to come together”).
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी में यह शब्द पुरानी फ़्रेंच के माध्यम से लैटिन conventus (“सभा/एकत्र होना”) से आया, जो convenire (“एक साथ आना/मिलना”) से बना है।
Definition
A convent is a place where a community of religious women (usually nuns) live together under religious rules and vows; it can also mean the buildings of that community. In some contexts (especially in India), “convent” is used for a Christian (often Catholic) school. Historically/rarely, it can also mean a meeting or assembly.
कॉन्वेंट वह स्थान/समुदाय है जहाँ धार्मिक महिलाएँ (आमतौर पर नन) धार्मिक नियमों और व्रतों के तहत साथ रहती हैं; यह शब्द उनके रहने की इमारतों के लिए भी आता है। कुछ संदर्भों (विशेषकर भारत) में “कॉन्वेंट” का अर्थ ईसाई (अक्सर कैथोलिक) स्कूल भी होता है। ऐतिहासिक/दुर्लभ अर्थ में यह सभा/सम्मेलन या बैठक के लिए भी प्रयुक्त हुआ है।
