Origin & History

Formed in the mid-20th century in formal language theory/computer science from context + free, popularized through the term context-free grammar (notably by Noam Chomsky’s hierarchy).

Definition

Describes something that does not rely on surrounding information to be understood or to operate; especially used in linguistics and computer science for rules/grammars where production rules apply independently of neighboring symbols (context).
